Cold weather warning sign

As winter approaches and the temperature falls, Motor Market offers its top winter maintenance tips to help keep your car on the road and out of trouble.

Whatever your motoring challenges, here are some solutions to keep you safe:

Check the anti-freeze level in the radiator and make sure it stays topped up all winter. It should contain a 50/50 mixture of anti-freeze and water. If in doubt, ask one of our mechanics.

Check your oil levels using the dipstick provided, ensuring (as with the anti-freeze) that the level is between the minimum and maximum at all times.

Winter is a testing time for car batteries, as you’ll often have both the heater and headlamps on. If your battery is coming to the end of its life - usually after around five years – get a new one.

Check both your tyre tread and your tyre pressure. The minimum tread the law requires is 1.6mm but we recommend a minimum of 2mm, or even 3mm.

The less tread you have, the less water your car tyres can get rid of and, when it’s icy, the harder it is for them to grip the road, increasing the risk of you losing control of your vehicle.

Also your tyres are more prone to loose pressure in cold weather, increasing the likelihood of skidding.

Keep your windscreen washer level topped up. Wet and wintry conditions mean dirty windscreens, reduced visibility and more wiping. Don’t forget the anti-freeze!

It’s also worth checking your wiper blades. If they’re coming to the end of their life you need to buy a new pair.
