As the coronavirus continues to spread globally, it will have a dramatic impact on most businesses including the car industry.
At Motor Market, we are here to provide support to car owners through this difficult time and want to ensure you have all the correct information.
Impact on new car manufacturing From the 25th March, the factories responsible for making two-thirds of the cars produced in the UK will have ceased production for several weeks because of the coronavirus outbreak.
Manufacturers such as Ford have announced the shutdown of its products across the UK. In a statement, Ford said: "Due to the dramatic impact this ongoing crisis is having on the European market and the supplier industry, we have decided to bring forward part of the summer shutdown period for our UK operations to the Easter period” (Source: BBC News) Shutdowns have also been confirmed by BMW, Toyota and Honda. BMW’s chief executive, Oliver Zipse, said the interruption was expected to last until 19 April, while Honda’s will run until at least 6 April. BMW said profits this year would be significantly lower due to the interruptions at plants that accounted for half of the 2.6m cars it built-in 2019. (Source: The Guardian)
Vehicle MOTs & Driving tests It has been announced by the Driver and Vehicle Standards agency that if your current vehicles MOT certificate is after 30th March then you will automatically have the MOT due date extended by 6 months, enabling the continuation of travelling to work and shops for necessities during this time. All Vehicles must be kept in a roadworthy condition, however, and MOT garages will remain open for essential repair work. Read more about this here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-mots-for-cars-vans-and-motorcycles-due-from-30-march-2020 However, if you’re MOT was due before the 30th March and you are not self-isolating or extremely vulnerable from COVID-19 you must still get an MOT as soon as you can make sure your vehicle meets road safety standards. Practical driving tests and annual testing for lorries, buses and coaches have also been suspended for up to 3 months initially.
