Birmingham’s clean air zone went live on 1st June 2021 and charges were effective from 14th June 2021.
The aim of introducing a clean air zone is to limit the pollution in the air mainly caused by vehicles on the road. Pollution can have a harmful effect on the health of people living and working in Birmingham city centre.
It will operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and will cover all the roads within the A4540 Middleway ring road (but not the Middleway itself). The charges will be £8 per day for cars, taxis and LGV’s and £50 per day for buses, coaches, and HGV’s. Payment can be made online. You can be fined if you do not pay within a 13-day window, £120 (reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days).
If your vehicle does not conform to Euro 6 emission standards (diesel cars) and Euro 4 (petrol) will need to pay the clean air zone charge. you can check online to see if your vehicle is chargeable.
You are automatically exempt if you have:
A vehicle with ultra-low emission, a disabled/passenger tax class vehicle, or a military or historic vehicle.
